I seem to be having something for the ‘good old days’

After watching ‘The Artist’ and ‘W.E.’ this week and currently reading ‘The Great Gatasby’, I seem to have developed a taste for 20s/30s/40s style fashion. When dresses went to the knees, and outfits were created to make the most of our the woman’s figure, I find myself wanting to wear something a bit more classy yet cool. I don’t mean wearing floating long tea dresses (actually, I wouldn’t mind so much) but I mean the ‘edgier’ side to that age of fashion, with Cigarette Pants and silk midi dresses in at the hip. I’m also quite sure that even Bree from Despearte Housewives as been having an influence on my fashion choices, with her silk blouses and fitted knee length skirts, making me want to choose to wear these options finished off with heels. What is going on with me? Maybe it’s a fashion moment or maybe it’s here to stay, who knows…

books i’m currently reading/glancing through…

Human Planet by BBC (Christmas present which I’m loving)
J F Kennedy: An Unfinished Life by Robert Dallek (more here
Elizabeth I by Christopher Haigh (for History - really not doing well on reading it)
Confessions of A Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella (fancied some girly reading last night after watching Dirty Dancing and I’ve already nearly finished the book)
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and other plays by Tennesse Williams (reading for English, quite good)
French Revolution by Christopher Hibbert (reading for my exam re-take because I didn’t read it the first time round)
Hamlet by Shakespeare (also reading for English, finding it better to read when my teacher explains- ha!)

don’t ask how I’m reading all these books at once. I’m not. I simply leave the ones I meant to be reading for my lessons and end up reading ones I’m way more interested in but has no help for my lessons (JFK, Confessions of a Shopaholic…)

that night I went out…

a week ago or so I made a post on pictures on eye make up and how I wanted to try the look out to a similar effect. I did take a picture just before I went out though the flash brightened most of the eye shadow out on the photo but you get the idea. Overall I think it was quite a nice look, and it didn’t matter to much anyway as I was in the dark for most of the night!

Outfit: Top Urban Outiftters, Shorts Topshop, Tights H&M, Boots ASOS

I also took a picture of my outfit, which for once I was happy with. Instead of wearing all my new stuff I tried mixing some new purchases with some of old. My shorts from Topshop are very new (boxing day sales purchase), and I completely love them. They’re are deep purple colour and are corduroy and I really enjoyed wearing them out as they are much more practical than wearing a dress, and were only £15. My top is from the boxing day sales last year from Urban Outfitters which I love because it’s a modern take on lace, with silver netting on top of a sheer black tee. I’m also wearing black panel tights from H&M and my favourite shoes ever (black wedge leather ankle) from ASOS. Even though they were pricey (£45) I do not regret buying them because they instantly make my outifts look better.
Also sorry for the poor photo quality, I was in a hurry and I’ve never been good at taking photos of myself in mirrors.

tops songs of two-thousand-and-eleven

  1. Call It What You Want - Foster The People
So this year I got a little bit obsessed with this band, saw them live went crazy and fell in love with their album. ‘Call It What You Want’ is my favourite off the album (tough decision) as it’s so catchy fun and I really like the message in the song. Listening to this on a summers day was bliss and automatically made me happier!
  2. Live Those Days Tonight - Friendly Fires
‘Pala’ was another favourite album of mine in 2011 and I found it extremely hard to pick a favourite song and would change my mind every week, but after seeing them live and looking back, ‘Live Those Days Tonight’ was my overall favourite as I think it reflects their sound and amazing music the best.
  3. Heart Skips A Beat - Olly Murs ft. Rizzle Kicks
I also fell in love with Rizzle Kicks at the end part of this year but this particular song, though they don’t feature in it much, gave Olly Murs a massive cool music boost with their beats echoing in the background of the song. Another summer favourite, I could sing a long to this all day. Not my typical taste to go for something so popular and high chart topping, but just shows Rizzle Kicks important influence on the track for me.
  4. Pumped Up Kicks - Foster The People
I was going to pick ‘Life On the Nickel’ for my second favourite Foster The People song but I think when looking back on 2011, Pumped Up Kicks needs to be on here as it was this very song that caught my attention on Foster The People and became a chillin’ summer classic. I also love how ironic the feel/sound of the song compared to the lyrics, displays Foster The People’s interesting nature.
  5. Belong- Washed Out
I fell in love with Washed Out’s whole sound. I love the summery feel, it makes me feel I’m floating in the sea somewhere foreign and warm, makes me automatically happier, so glad I found Washed Out.
  6. Down With The Trumpets - Rizzle Kicks
Another Rizzle Kicks song but this time one of their own. This song made them pretty big this year and it was the song that got my attention caught. As nearly all the other songs are in the list, it was a big summer hit. I absolutely love the lyrics in this song and it’s great that Rizzle Kicks are young and so similar to my age, I can totally understand what they are saying, especially in their mix song ‘I’m 17’ another 2011 favourite.

Ryan Golsing’s band Dead Man’s Skulls

I’m not going to pretend, I was not expecting much from Hollywood actor Ryan Gosling’s band, ‘Dead Man’s Skulls’. But after reading some comments on tumblr that it had a similar feel to Foster The People, I decided to stop being so dismissive and gave it a listen. Some songs are a little, what I would personally describe, as boring in my opinion but still quite good and easy to listen to and I think comparisons with ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ by Foster The People are understandable. One of my favourite’s is ‘Pa Pa Power’ by the band, take a listen. It won’t be what you expect, I’ll promise you that.

Also, the fact that Ryan Gosling is gorgeous should be a fine enough excuse to listen.

covers of 2011 by models.com
MODELS.com chooses it’s favourite magazine covers from the past year here.My personal favourite has to be the March edition of Vouge Italia featuring Saskia de Brauw. Vouge Italia covers are beautiful and so detailed and interesting to look at any way, but this particular edition featured sparkles and glittering shimmer! How can you not love?

John F. Kennedy

really enjoying my JFK biography so far (JFK: an unfinished life). It’s so detailed and long though, I’ve read quite a lot yet I’ve only just got onto the part where he joined the Navy after university. Very interesting though!

all images from yayer.co.uk

just found this site through a blog and I’m already totally in love! I’ve been on the site only for a bit but already I have found so much I want to buy. The prices are quite reasonable and the style of the clothing is definitely my style. I currently have my eye on the silver metallic shirt (pictured middle) which is priced at £25. Looks like my account will be getting smaller and smaller…

Today I watched the documentary ‘Senna’ with the family (it was my Mum’s Christmas present to my uncle). My mum and her brothers and sisters would watch Senna when they were younger as they were big motor racing fans, so this afternoon we all got together to watch it. I personally knew nothing about Senna apart from his death but found myself quite engrossed and interested in the film, especially about the whole Prost + Senna rivalry and how Senna felt cheated and hard done by the FIA. It was a very emotional film though, especially when Senna won the Brazilian Grand Prix suffering from muscle spasms during his victory and the pain he suffered to lift up the trophy was an emotional scene.  And of course the end was very emotional. He seemed like a very humble and nice character and he impacted millions, especially in his home of Brazil. It’s also interesting also how the film had such an impact on me, despite me knowing very little about him beforehand. A very well put together documentary overall, and highly recommended for anyone into motor racing or maybe not even interested at all.
